The stationery industry in Taiwan took shape during the 1950s. Export sales commenced in the 1960s, achieving strong growth through the efforts of the industry and government support. The gift industry rise to prominence began in the 1970s as the economy began to take off as well in Taiwan. From the 1990s onwards, The economic development began to level off with labor shortages and rising wages in Taiwan. When Taiwan joined the WTO in 2002, the arrival of high-quality, highly-designed gift & stationery products from overseas began putting pressure on the gift & stationery industries in Taiwan. The coming of the Internet Age and the popularization of 3C products such as smart phones and tablets meant the traditional gift & stationery industries were now faced with unprecedented challenges. The gift & stationery industry responded by gradually switching to a build-to-order model in Taiwan. They also created their own brands to increase the added value of their products and started taking green ideals seriously. Pang-Dyi Design has more than 20 years of experience in design and printing. It specializes in paper and leather products made from environmentally friendly materials, and its proprietary binder notebook industry is an industry first. Pang-Dyi has been expanding its factory in China with a view to the global market. Formed less than two years ago, Paper Shoot Technologies combined paper and digital cameras to create the first "paper shoot " in the world. The company quickly garnered a host of design awards and has drawn widespread attention by collaborating with many leading international brands. Artico Life Inc. is a long-time exporter of hand-made merchandise. The company has been investing in paper tape merchandise in recent years and this has proved very popular with Western countries. Asia has recently been swept by a paper tape craze, so Artico took the opportunity to sell quality paper tape products under the "iTape" brand back in Taiwan and has carved out its own niche in the market. Three very different development strategies have each discovered their own business opportunities and serves as a testimony to the vibrant spirit of competition in the gift & stationery industry in Taiwan.
