The Port of Varna is the largest port in Bulgaria and one of the biggest in the Black Sea. Located on the western coast of the Black Sea, the port serves as a major gateway for both imports and exports to and from Bulgaria, as well as a transit point for cargoes destined for other countries in the region.
In the 20th century, the port underwent significant modernization and expansion. In the 1960s and 1970s, new quays, warehouses, and other infrastructure were constructed, making the port capable of handling larger volumes of cargo.
Today the port handles a wide range of cargoes, including containers, bulk cargo, general cargo, and ro-ro cargo. The port has a total of 24 berths, with depths ranging from 4.5 meters to 12 meters. The port is capable of handling vessels up to 300 meters in length and 10.5 meters in draft.
The city of Varna has ambitious plans for further expansion and modernization of the port. The council aims to increase its capacity and efficiency, as well as to enhance its role as a gateway for trade between Bulgaria and the rest of the world.
One of the key projects planned for the port is the construction of a new deep-water terminal, capable of handling larger vessels and greater volumes of cargo. The terminal will be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including modern cranes and other handling equipment, as well as advanced IT systems for cargo tracking and management.
In addition, the port plans to further develop its intermodal capabilities, including the construction of new rail links and the expansion of its road transport network. These improvements will enable the port to better serve its customers and provide faster and more efficient cargo handling services.
