As key players in the global intelligent machine industry, Taiwan-based family businesses have consistently adapted and thrived in the face of new challenges. During the 1980s and 90s, the industry’s first generation moved out of their comfort zone in an effort to better serve customers of all sizes, increase their international profile, and catch up with or even surpass their German and Japanese competitors. It is therefore fair to say that the Taiwanese machine industry began its transformation under the leadership of the first generation and has never looked back; the industry has continued to bring together Taiwan’s strengths in innovative technology industries and create new value for customers and stakeholders around the world. The second generation’s arrival in these family businesses brought new perspectives on digital technology and brands to this emerging industry. To expedite the digital transition and establish partnerships with smart technology ecosystem partners, a group of second-generation industry figures founded the Taichung Machine Industry Second Generation Association – or G2 for short. James Chien, honorary president of G2, explained that the alliance has achieved impressive results by enabling members to learn from each other’s experiences, as demonstrated by the growth of machine industry exports to USD $27.7 billion in 2019. This Taiwanese strategy of “creating a shared future” has helped win the confidence of customers spanning numerous countries and industries, while Perfect Machine and Habor have become the “hidden heroes” behind factories across the world.
